Music on the Esplanade Evenings

Tuesday Evenings, June 8 to August 31, 2010
6 to 8 p.m.

Unwind after your work day as you listen to relaxing performances by local musicians set on the Chicago Botanic Garden's front lawn. This live musical series showcases an assortment of genres including Spanish guitar, jazz, and blues. The Esplanade offers a beautiful setting for great entertainment and seating for a wide variety of guests — and only on concert evenings, you may have a picnic there as well!

Top off the evening with light fare and a glass of wine, premium beer, or other beverages available for purchase on the Esplanade.

June 8 Chicago Brass Band Brass Ensemble
Chicago Brass Band is a 30-piece brass and percussion ensemble that performs concerts throughout the year in the Chicago metropolitan area in addition to participating in festivals and competitions throughout the world. Composed of cornets, flugel and tenor horns, baritones, euphoniums, trombones, tubas, and percussion, the band’s repertoire includes classical transcriptions, popular music, jazz, traditional, show tunes, marches, and original works for brass band.

June 15 Route 66 A Cappella Quartet
Route 66 made its spectacular debut in 1994 in The Netherlands and proved to be a success in a wide variety of venues all over Europe. Founder Leslie Gray Robbins returned to the United States in 1996 and re-created this successful group here in Chicago. Performing music styles ranging from the 1940s through present day, Route 66 continues to perform at a wide range of venues, from big to small, intimate to fun- filled, around Chicagoland and all across the U.S.A.

Bopology is a six-piece Chicago swing and jazz band with a tight, professional sound that has developed from the experience of performing together since 1992.

Fernandez + Kimball are known for their flamenco pop and Latin American standards, as well as traditional and classical flamenco.

July 6 R-Gang Motown and R&B
Voted Best R&B Band in Chicagoland, R-Gang specializes in Motown and R&B music from the 60s to today. R-Gang is composed of some of the most highly respected members of Chicagoland's musical community. From playing with national acts like Survivor and Mavis Staples to writing and recording for groups like the Doobie Brothers to performing as the on-field band for the Chicago Bears and pregame entertainment for the Chicago Bulls, R-Gang never fails to please.

July 13 Fatum Jazz Quintet Jazz
Chicago's own Fatum brothers are at it again, this time with their all-star quintet. John (drums) and Michael (trumpet) visit the Chicago Botanic Garden this summer after five months in Italy to perform with Chicago's freshest and most promising jazz talents. Celebrated in the community for their swingin' music and exceptional stage presence with the Fatum Brothers' Jazz Band, the Fatum brothers will be presenting a concert of originals and jazz classics with Downbeat award-winning Adam Kromelow on keyboards, Chicago's finest Rajiv Orozco on alto sax, and Chicago's best-kept secret, Dan Chmielinski, on bass. They can't wait to swing with you!

July 20 The Special Consensus Bluegrass
The Special Consensus is celebrating a banner year in 2010—the 35th anniversary of the formation of this nationally and internationally renowned touring and recording bluegrass band in Chicago (they formed in 1975). Band founder/leader/banjo player Greg Cahill still resides in the Chicago area; other members live in Nashville, Tennessee, and Topeka, Kansas. The band repertoire includes original songs written by band members and bluegrass classics performed on banjo, guitar, mandolin, and bass, with plenty of solo and harmony vocals.

July 27 Alessandro Latin Fusion
A prolific songwriter, Alessandro was also trained in voice technique and self-taught in guitar, piano, and Afro-Latino percussion. Alessandro is today recognized as much for the uplifting spirit of his songs and the soul-stirring quality of his lyrics as for his musical skills and warm and soothing voice. His love for music, the performing arts, and people of all races, creeds, and cultures, plus his firm conviction that artists are essentially storytellers, permeate Alessandro's music.

August 3 1969 Classic Songs of the Sixties
The band 1969 breathes new life into songs made famous by Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, Joe Cocker, Cream, and so many other stars of the Woodstock era. Featuring four exciting lead vocalists, 1969 also has a blistering rhythm section, period costuming, and a great stage show. You'll find yourself dancing and singing along like it's 1969 all over again!

August 10 Mr. Myers Caribbean, Calypso, and Rock
Mr. Myers blends the sounds of calypso and ska, the rhythms of reggae, and a touch of rock-and-roll with some favorite tunes to create their own special style of music: Caribbean rock. The magic of Mr. Myers’ trademark sound stems from bandleader Todd Donnelly’s use of steel drums or steel pans. One of the first midwestern bands to make use of the steel drums, Mr. Myers also pulls its sound from its highly talented and diversely educated members, all with strong backgrounds in jazz, classical, rock, and world music.

August 24 Morry Sochat and The Special 20’s Chicago Blues
Morry Sochat and The Special 20's bring a fresh sound to the Chicago blues scene. They mix classic Chicago blues with swing and rock-and-roll from the 1950s. They’re influenced by the best in blues history: Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Louis Jordan, Junior Wells, and all of the Chicago greats.
