May 31 October 31
One of the worlds most exceptional and evocative contemporary sculpture exhibits comes to Chicago from May 31 to October 31 with Chapungu: Custom and Legend, A Culture in Stone. Ninety sculptures, hand-carved by artists of Zimbabwe from native stone, will be presented outdoors and indoors by the Chicago Botanic Garden and Garfield Park Conservatory Alliance.
These powerful sculptures, on view for the first time ever in the Chicago area, have met with acclaim wherever they have traveledincluding Kew Gardens in London, Musée Rodin in Paris and museums in Holland, Germany, Australia, Great Britain and more. The sculptures tell profound stories of African life at the same time as they express universal themes such as family, love, nature and the spirit world.
Chapungu artists bring Chicago closer to Africa by accompanying the exhibit and publicly creating works of sculpture. Other programs complementing the exhibit include guided tours, sculpture workshops and performances by Zimbabwe musicians.
"This is the birth of a great new art, capable of speaking about the whole of creation, from personal and family feeling to the world of spirit, soul and self. It is a thrilling adventure of contemporary art."
Arts Review, London
